Shipping oversized cargo via sea freight can be a daunting process. Heavy equipment and machinery that is out-of-gauge and awkwardly shaped presents certain issues, and the process needs some careful planning and preparation.
Any cargo that won’t fit into a standard 40 ft shipping container, or is out-of-gauge, will be classed as oversized. Most commonly, this includes agricultural machinery such as tractors and combine harvesters, and construction machinery and equipment such as bulldozers, cranes, and excavators.
We have an established reputation in the field of break bulk shipping, with over 20 years of experience of successfully sending cargo of all shapes and sizes to port destinations across the world. Our team at Seaway Logistics have the knowledge and resources to rise to ocean freight challenges of all types.
There are three main methods of shipping oversized cargo via ocean freight. These include disassembling the equipment so that it can be fitted into multiple containers, the Roll-on/Roll-off method (RoRo), and the Lift-on/Lift-off method (LoLo).
Static equipment that is awkwardly shaped may be able to be dismantled to fit into standard 20ft or 40ft shipping containers. Self-propelled machinery that can be driven on and off board a vessel are usually transported using the Roll-on/Roll-off (RoRo)method. This is a quick and cost-effective way to export wheeled and tracked machinery overseas.
Out-of-gauge or oversized cargo that cannot be towed or driven can also be lifted on and off board the vessel using cranes.
