The UK Chamber of Shipping has announced plans for a global online meeting with an agenda that will address trade barriers and improving collaboration on green R&D initiatives.
Hellenic Shipping News reports that the ‘M7’ meeting will have a similar invitation list to the G7 meeting, which is due to take place in the UK later in 2021.
Representatives from the UK, Australia, Canada, France, Germany, India, Italy, Japan, South Africa, South Korea and the United States will join the new event, scheduled for 9 June.
Launching the initiative, UK Chamber of Shipping President John Denholm said: “Shipping is vital for international trade and as we emerge from the Covid-19 crisis, there has never been a better time to strengthen our global connections and look for ways to improve trade and learn about projects that will deliver a cleaner, greener shipping industry.”
The G7 brings together the world’s leading economies, and this year the UK government has extended an invite to Australia, India, South Africa, and South Korea.
Denholm added that with the event being held in the UK, he wanted to bring together the same countries as the G7 summit to see how leading and developing shipping nations can better align global trade regulations, as well as coordinate eco-friendly research and development projects.
The event starts at 1 PM on 9 June and begins by looking at the advancements in digitising trade. The second part of the meeting focuses on green research and development projects, and what initiatives the M7 members are participating in to help achieve decarbonisation across the industry.
