Smart technology and internet connectivity is now commonplace in all industries and across all sectors, with digital adoption fast transforming the way we do business… and it seems that the shipping and maritime industry is certainly no different in this respect.
A new Inmarsat report has, in fact, revealed that the sector has adopted more Internet of Things (IoT) solutions than any other, with some in the industry suggesting that leading shipping organisations have plans in place to invest around $2.5 million in this area over the next three years to achieve approximately 14 per cent cost savings within five to seven years, Sea News reports.
IoT solutions are now being used in the industry to enhance security and safety, as well as recording and tracking fuel use. Predictive analytics can also help those in the sector make better decisions regarding route and delivery planning, focusing on real-time inventory tracking, automated vehicles and more.
“Internet of Things is a connected technology, which is filling in the gap between humans, machines, and data; in turn, is providing an edge to the transport sectors as they are now more than ready to embrace the definite role and flexible nature of IoT,” the news source observed.
Research from Gartner, published in August last year, suggested that 5.8 billion enterprise and automotive IoT endpoints will be in use by the end of 2020, a 21 per cent increase on 2019.
Utilities will be the highest user of endpoints, but building automation will see the largest growth rate this year of 42 per cent, followed by automotive and healthcare.
