MP for Witney and West Oxfordshire Robert Courts has just been promoted to minister for aviation and maritime at the Department for Transport, saying what a “huge privilege and honour” it is to have been asked to serve as a minister in this regard.
Mr Courts will be replacing Kelly Tolhurst who, after seven months in the job, is now moving to a new ministerial role within the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government.
“I am delighted to join the government with an exciting portfolio which includes driving forward the work of the Jet Zero Council - a groundbreaking initiative aiming to deliver a zero-carbon transatlantic flight within a generation. I look forward to getting started with this important work,” Mr Courts said in a statement on his website.
His appointment was welcomed by the British Ports Association, with chief executive Richard Ballantyne saying that the organisation is looking forward to enjoying a “productive relationship” with him.
Mr Ballantyne went on to say that the ports industry has shown throughout the pandemic that it is resilient, while demonstrating just how important it is to the UK, making sure that goods continue to come into the country at this critical time.
He added that ports lie at the heart of many of the opportunities and many of the challenges that the country now faces, whether that’s achieving net zero or Brexit, and the BPA is now looking forward to working with Mr Court as soon as possible to set out the priorities for the industry.
